FINALS + GRID

RATIONALE

My topic was indoor plant hunting in the capital. I picked this because of a personal attachment to the subject and I thought it would be a great idea to design with.

What were the relevant rational and emotive qualities / attitude / atmosphere you wanted to convey:

The vibe I wanted to go for right from the start was a really pretty, aesthetically pleasing design that had light bright colours and would attract particularly people around my age group. Right from the start when collecting ideas for my moodboard I wanted it to all be green, luscious, and pretty, to reflect my own love for plants and greenery. I wanted my design to be visually clean and easy to read, I didnt want to have anything that would distract the reader from the brochure itself. 

Visual language:

The visual language is a big part to conveying the message I wanted to show, the colour palette I chose best reflects the subject matter and the locations. I used backgrounds to give a sense on what the location would feel like along with the images of the plants and locations itself. 

Application of grid:

My grid structure was a 4 column and I think this worked well especially in my compulsory set text pages. With my 3 page spreads I kept the text short and simple as I didnt want to overcrowd the page, The placement of the text alongside the imagery and titles gives a nice hierarchy to the brochure and makes it easy to follow. 

Typographic approach:

The fonts that I ended up with on my final were the best I think I could have picked, I had worked with 6+ different fonts to see what style best suited my theme and I think by mixing a handwritten cursive font with something tall and skinny created a nice overall look.

Own process:

I learnt a lot about my own process and I thought it was a very positive one. I am a big fan of using a workbook as I constantly went back to see what I had done previously and used that to develop my ideas and make sure that I was on the right track that I wanted to be on from the start. I found it really beneficial getting critiqued and been given advice from my tutors. It enabled me to take a step back from my work and see what things needed to be changed to have an even more successful design. Talking with my peers in my class and from other classes made me also have a wider perspective. 

For future projects I will definitely be following the same process as it helped me work to my best standard.

I think the overall outcome reflects a lot on my personal design style, the vibe that I was intending to go for and the experience that someone would have when going to look for some indoor plants.

FINAL BROCHURES

Here my final brochures have been printed. I chose to duraseal one of them to give it a cleaner more durable look, also to make it look more professional. The idea of that was good in my head but the outcome resulted in a few air bubbles which make it look messy so in the end I ended up handing in both copies.

PUNA FORMATIVE CRITIQUE

On this day we had one on ones with another person in our class. I was lucky enough to get some great feedback and some constructive criticism which allowed me to view my design in a different light. This lead me to changing a few things around to improve the overall look of my brochure.

SEMI-FINALS

At this point I am very close to finishing. My work has come together and the overall aesthetic and vibe I was going for right from the beginning is right on track. There are a few minor things I need to fix up such as scaling things down a bit, making sure everything is accurate to my 4 column grid and physically printing it out to get a 3d idea on if i am satisfied with it.

WEEK 5.

After the 2 week break I came back after experimenting with more design styles. I had decided on my layout for the spreads I was going to use. These are the designs I came up with. I am not loving these. I am not a fan of using the univers typeface. Definitely need to change this one up.

THURSDAY WEEK 4. CRITIQUING MY WORK

After critiquing my work, my ideas and the direction I should head in became a whole lot clearer.
I knew that i needed to focus on adding things to my spreads that reflected the location, making the spread feel like you were at the place.
For instance if you were at the markets you are in a busy bright environment but with the bright blue open sky around you and the water close by. - I decided for my markets spread to apply this feeling in image form.
Defining my grid was also another job, I decided on a 4 column grid.
A hero and hierarchy had to also be established.

DEVELOPMENTS WEEK 4

Week 4 began with me still developing my style and arrangements. I had many ideas and were just trying to get as much out of my head onto the page as possible and then seeing what worked and what didnt. I knew my colour palette was quite clear and that was one of my strong points, I just needed to narrow down my text and how to arrange that, along side picking a font and deciding on a specific design style. 

3 PAGE SPREADS ~ STARTING POINT

This here was my starting point for my layouts, I began to play with ideas on layouts and arrangements with text and imagery. I knew with these layouts that it was simply just a starting point and I did not want my finals to look like this. This did help me generate more ideas and keep improving my work.
